Alumni Survey.  Vermont - like many states - is searching for ways to keep its young talent.  As part of this effort, the office of Governor Jim Douglas conducted a survey  of alumni/ae of Vermont colleges and universities to learn what Vermont can do to make our state a permanent destination for them and their families.  In the Fall of 2006, a survey link was provided to all Alumni Directors to be emailed to all alumni.

A total of 2, 776 web based survey responses were received, and in April 2007, the Growing Vermont's Next Generation Workforce released its findings.  The results of the survey were shared with all Vermont colleges and universities.

Vermont Teddy Bear Partnership.  Since 2001, the Vermont Higher Education Council has joined in partnership with the Vermont Teddy Bear Company to recognize outstanding community service by a college student in Vermont.

The award, the Vermont Student Citizen Award, is presented each year by Vermont Teddy Bear Company President, Elisabeth Robert, and provides $1,000 to the student, $1,000 to the college they attend, and $1,000 to the community agency where the student performed volunteer service.

The sixth annual Vermont Teddy Bear company award was made at the VHEC Annual Meeting on November 7, 2006 at the DoubleTree Hotel in South Burlington, VT.  The award was made to Jillian Hall, a student at Lyndon State College.  Her community service included volunteering with A.S.S.I.S.T (A Society of Students in Service Together) on campus by organizing food drives, alternative spring break in St. Johnsbury, and worked on the Cabot Fall Work Day to winterize homes for the elderly.

This year there were seven nominations submitted.  Each chief executive was invited to nominate one student who had performed exemplary community service.  Jillian will be honored at an event in January at the Vermont Teddy Bear Company.

College Pathways.  Beginning in 2002, the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation organized an event called “College Pathways” for high school juniors and their parents.  It is designed to help them get a head start on the college planning process.

When the event was first held in 2002, one site (Castleton State College) was used.  In 2005, the event grew to two sites (Castleton State College and Saint Michael’s College) and attracted nearly 1,400 registrants.  Because of the popularity of College Pathways, VSAC has planned a third site (Lyndon State College) to better reach students and families in the Northeast Kingdom.

Information on future College Pathway events is available on the VSAC web site www.vsac.org.
