Frequently  Asked Questions

Q. How can I find out which colleges in Vermont offer a program I want to study?

A.  The Vermont Higher Education Council publishes an annual directory of all degree and certificate programs at Vermont colleges.  You can access the directory by going to the publications button on this web site or you can contact the VHEC office (info@vhec.info) to ask for a copy to be sent to you.

Q. Is there a listing of job openings at Vermont colleges and universities?

A.  Unfortunately, there is no central listing; each institution hires separately.  Because of this, you will first need to determine which schools are of interest to you.  This web site has links to all Vermont colleges for this step.

Most Vermont colleges include employment opportunities on their web sites.  Check the "Employment Opportunities" page of this web site for links directly to these employment pages.  If you are interested in a college without a link shown there, you will need to contact them directly.

Q.  Do you have information on how an out-of-state institution can offer courses or degrees in Vermont?

A.  Approval by the Vermont State Board of Education is required prior to offering courses or degrees in Vermont.  Contact Robert Lorenz, Vermont Department of Education Consultant for Postsecondary Approval at (802) 828-5139 for further information and application forms.

Q.  Who can I speak with about my student loan?

A.  You need to contact the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation at (802) 654-3770.

Q.  How can I get licensed to teach in Vermont?

A.  Call the Vermont Department of Education at (802) 828-2445 for questions concerning teacher licensure.

Q.  My son has been accepted at two Vermont colleges.  How can I tell which school is better?

A.  “Better” is a relative term, and would depend on your son and his needs.  All colleges and universities belonging to the Vermont Higher Education Council are accredited.  To determine which school will meet your son’s needs, you should visit the campus, meet with professors in his planned area of study, and even check to see how graduates in his field have placed in jobs.

Q.  My daughter is graduating from high school in Vermont and wants to attend a Vermont college, but we cannot afford the cost.  Can you help?

A.  The Vermont Higher Education Council does not provide financial aid.  Your daughter should check with the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation at (802) 654-3770 to explore loan and grant options.  In addition, she should speak with the Financial Aid office at the college she is interested in attending.  There are many options available including work-study, loans and grants.
